In the park is born one of the major rivers of
Cantabria; Ason, that eventually ends up returning to the sea waters in
the marshes of Santoña. Perhaps the most representative except the park's
flora and fauna, is the shaping that occurred in the Quaternary
glaciers, karst terrain, dotted with sinkholes, potholes and
depressions. If you look at the rocks that are along the descent of the
river, you may find fossil remains, typical of a reef, formed when the
sea covered this area, approximately 100 million years ago. The
vegetation is typical of deciduous Atlantic forest, with an abundance of
beech, birch and oak. Definately a place you would like to see.
